WHAT IS @SURFMAIL
@SURFMAIL is a free WEB-based E-MAIL service provided by the makers of THE FREEWARE PUBLISHING SITE. The engine is a perl script running on the FREEWAREPUB.NET server.

The service is very useful for people who want to have access tho their personal mailbox on different computers on different places, without having to reinstall the e-mail program. With @SURFMAIL you can check, send and receive your email simply by using a web browser. You can compose new messages, reply or forward. If you want you can delete e-mail messages from your mailbox. The service also supports multiple attachments.
The difference between other WEB based E-MAIL services (such as HOTMAIL or POSTMASTER or BIGFOOT or ROCKETMAIL or ...) is that @SURFMAIL does the job with your own e-mail account. You don't have to take another e-mail adress
LOGIN
Enter your e-mail account. If your email is myname@my.mailserver.com then you have to enter myname
In the example above, "myname" is the local part which is the name of a mailbox on POP3 server. The "host part", e.g. "my.mailserver.com" appended after an "@" of the whole e-mail adress is the server where the mail is stored and can be read later via client mail software running on the user's computer.
PASSWORD
Enter your e-mail account password. We use a safe encrytion routine to hide the data. So your password will not be visible during your @SURFMAIL session.
Your e-mail password is the key to your mailbox at the POP3 server, and must be provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
POP3 SERVER
Enter the server name or IP nr. of the server where your e-mail is stored. This can be mail.mailserver.com

POP3 means: Version 3 of the Post Office Protocol. POP3 is defined in RFC 1081, written in November 1988 by Marshall Rose, which is based on RFC 918 (since revised as RFC 937). POP3 allows a client computer to retrieve electronic mail from a POP3 server via a (temporary) TCP/IP or other[?] connection, the normal POP3 port, 110. It does not provide for sending mail, which is assumed to be done via SMTP or some other method.
SMTP SERVER
Enter the server name or IP nr. of the server you can use to send e-mail. This can be smtp.mailserver.com In some cases the POP3 server and SMTP server are the same, If you don't enter a SMTP server name @SURFMAIL will use the same server as your POP3 server

SMTP means: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol and is defined in STD 10, RFC 821, used to transfer electronic mail between computers, usually over Internet. It is a server to server protocol, so other protocols are used to access the messages. The SMTP dialog usually happens in the background under the control of the message transport system, e.g. sendmail but it is possible to interact with an SMTP server using telnet to connect to the normal SMTP port, 25
